Freds Pass Rural Show
The Freds Pass Rural Show is a yearly gathering of locals and community groups in the Northern Australian capital, Darwin City. It was started with the goal of focusing on a wide range of businesses--agriculture, pastoralism, mining and horticulture--and activities that include annual fund raising campaigns. It will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2008. Show AttractionsThe show, which is participated by more than 200 exhibitors plus over 30,000 visitors each year, offers many great main activities like country music concerts, exhibits, competitions, and fireworks displays. Competitions that include country divisions and activities such as rodeo, fire protection skills, equestrian, wood chopping and axe throwing are also an attraction. Add to that the occasional sport competitions such as rugby and football matches. Exhibitors are commonly comprised of representatives in industries like livestock and poultry, food, mining, arts and crafts. Most people have the impression that country or rural gatherings are only for the aged people of the community. But it is quite notable that many young individuals also take part in competitions, exhibits and performances. The Freds Pass Rural Show has also included a performing arts competition and fashion parade for young people in their annual program. Young members of the rural community are given the chance to put their skills and talents on display and they tend to be more surprising and innovative each year. Lawn Mower RacesAlthough rarely included in the Freds Pass Rural Show activities, lawn mower races are also popular among the young community members. Ordinary lawn mowers were customized into what resemble mini-motorcycles. The first lawn mower race was in the 1986 Freds Pass Rural Show and as years progressed and the lawn mowers became faster, young people started gaining interest in the race. The annual event is not only a community festival famous for its 30-year feat, but is also an important gathering that showcases rural talent at its finest. With technology and city life gaining popular support and preference, the Freds Pass Rural Show suggests that there are still people who see the beauty of living in the countryside. |
