Celebrate Life And Culture Through Darwin Festival

It's best for travelers to visit Darwin, NT's (Northern Territory) capital, during August since this is the month when the captivating Darwin Festival is celebrated. An event that truly captures the symphony of culture in Australia's Darwin, this 18-day celebration is a hodgepodge of amazing competitions, art shows, musical performances, exhibits, food festivals, theater shows, workshops and other activities that showcase Darwin's multicultural community.

Originally held as a celebration of the community's resiliency after experiencing the devastating effects of Cyclone Tracy in the early 70's, Darwin Festival is now an international event that celebrates the life and culture of Darwin citizens.

Darwin is known as Australia's tropical city because of its proximity to Southeast Asia. Consequently, the community in this city is comprised of individuals with Southeast-Asian or Asia-Pacific roots. One of the aims of Darwin Festival is to promote these communities and their significant contributions to the unique culture of the city.

Darwin Festival: What's on Offer

Local talent and artists are featured in a variety of shows ranging from theatrical performances to comedic acts for the young and old. Exciting street shows feature unconventional Asian artists who tell the story of how the Darwin society is reacting to the influx of foreign culture. Indigenous tribes of Australia's NT are also showcased through art exhibits and competitions, creative dance concerts and other fun-filled activities.

For those who want a taste of Darwin's delectable cuisines, some of the city's top chefs offer a food extravaganza that will definitely excite the travelers' taste buds. Served in an open area, the al fresco-like setting along with a beautiful sunset puts the visitors into a state of bliss and awe.

Aside from these spectacular shows, amazing displays and decorations are strategically placed within the city. Lanterns taking the shape of a fish are artfully hung on trees, creating a truly marvelous and exciting atmosphere. Moreover, colorful kiosks and booths selling an array of eclectic trinkets and souvenirs await shoppers.

Audiences glued to their seats during the recent 2007 Darwin Festival were able to watch stunning performances from Gyuto Monks, Sidetrack Performance Group, The Kransky Sisters, Sarah Blasko, Nabariek, Cavenagh Theater Group and other equally talented local and foreign artists. For the next annual celebration, travelers should book early since some events have limited seats. Entry fees for some of these spellbinding shows are very affordable, making this festival a perfect opportunity for travelers to see a glimpse of Darwin's amazing cultural diversity.
