Darwin Cup Carnival
Horse racing is a popular sport in Australia. Darwin, the Northern Territory capital, holds an annual spectacle that is all about horses, racing and having fun. August is the chosen month for the Darwin Cup Carnival. At this time of the year, the weather is as pleasant as the warmth and hospitality of the locals. At the Darwin Cup Carnival, horse racing is taken to a higher level as shown by the number of spectators and participants that join in the fun every year. The series of racing adventures held before the festivities culminate to the biggest and most exciting horse racing event - the Carlton Draught Darwin Cup - at the Fannie Bay Racecourse. The Darwin Cup Carnival is often associated with the Melbourne Cup, Australia's major thoroughbred horse racing event. In fact, it is often referred to as the mini Melbourne Cup. This is a proof of how huge this annual festival has become since it began in the 1950s. The Darwin Cup Carnival, however, is not merely about horse racing. The month-long carnival is also filled with food, fun, entertainment, and other things that never fail to delight visitors and locals alike. Parties and cocktails are held almost every day. This is the time of the year when everyone comes out in their best outfits to join in all the fun and excitement. Aside from tourists and locals, the Darwin Cup also attract some big-name visitors from all over the country. Most of these prominent visitors are well-known in the horse racing industry while a few are famous TV and movie personalities. The gathering of all these famed people make the Darwin Cup all the more fun and popular. True enough, attending the Darwin Cup Carnival is one of the best ways to experience the Northern Territory at its finest. The warm locals, the scenic spots and the exciting events are enough reasons to take the trip to Australia. |
