Darwin, Major Events

Darwin, Northern Territory's capital, has a wide array of activities both locals and tourists are bound to enjoy. With miles of beaches and several parks, Darwin is a city brimming with culture, nature and entertainment any time of the year. The city's tourism industry is seen as one of the biggest sources of revenue. Almost two million people came to Australia's Northern Territory in 2005 and they spent almost $1.5 billion in booking tours and accommodation. In fact, the city is considered the hub for tourists who would like to visit Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge and Litchfield National Park. Apart from these must-see sights, Darwin also boasts some of its popular major events such as the Freds Pass Rural Show, the Royal Darwin Show, the Arafura Games, Darwin Cup Carnival, Spectacular Darwin Rodeo and the Darwin Festival.

Shows

> The Freds Pass Rural Show is said to be distinctively Darwin because of its lineup of activities. During this event, over 200 exhibitors gather for wood chop, rodeo, livestock, arts, crafts and equestrian displays. Aside from these, the event also showcases some of Australia's country music stars.

> The highlight in Top End's community calendar is the Royal Darwin Show, where the city fills the country in a three-day event of fun, competition and learning. People from the different industries such as arts and crafts, horticulture, cooking, photography, machinery and livestock gather for exhibitions and competitions. Visitors can also watch equestrian events, live entertainment shows and firework displays. There are also stalls for food and drinks, information and products for animal nursery.

Sporting events

> Held every two years, the Arafura Games is an international sports event where players from Australasia compete. Dubbed as the "meeting of Sporting Neighbours", this event took its name after the Arafura Sea found between Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Boxing, soccer, swimming, tennis, basketball, badminton, football, ten-pin bowling and triathlon are just a few of the sports events included in the Arafura Games.

> The Darwin Cup Carnival is considered a major sports event in Darwin. Known as a prime horse race in the city, this event is where spectators gather at the Fannie Bay Race Course to join in the fun and excitement. The Darwin Cup Carnival's event types include carnival, horse and special events. There's also an event called, Ladies Day, for women who would like to dress up and enjoy a delicious luncheon and loads of ladies' drinks.
