East Point Military Museum

Darwin, NT's capital, is the actual site of many of Australia's historic encounters with the Japanese army during WW II. Considered as a vital military base of the British empire during its reign, NT's East Point was where the legion's artillery withstood the bomb raids that exterminated the lives of hundreds of brave soldiers.

To serve as a testament of this heroic event, the East Point Military Museum was established. Situated within the East Point Reserve, this historical place is set against a lush tropical paradise along with areas that allow the visitors to actually see an amazing view of the entire site.

Inside

Aside from its wonderful surroundings, the museum houses a vast collection of photos, memorabilia, artifacts, ancient military equipment and footage that serves as souvenirs of the country's colorful past.

Several well-preserved artillery guns, vehicles, aviation equipment, enlarged black-and-white photos and bunkers transport visitors to a time where valiant soldiers tried to survive and protect their base against the incessant bombings made by the Japanese army during the early months of 1942. Popular displays include huge army tanks set against coconut and palm trees, gun towers that provide a magnificent view of the whole area, and an ancient fortress where the British and Australian troops gathered to effectively plan their defenses against the Japanese bombers.

Displays also feature other important artifacts and special video footage that tells the real story behind the courageous attempts of the "Spitfire" troops assigned to the area so as to eliminate the Japanese bombers. Their attempts were successful as many Japanese planes where shot down, eradicating the danger that destroyed most of Darwin city and its surrounding regions.

Considered as the city's first historic museum, this establishment also serves as a constant reminder of how the Australian army valiantly fought the Japanese troops despite the fact the bombings destroyed most of the site's equipment and navy ships.
