Darwin, Northern Territory Information

Darwin is the international gateway to the Northern Territory. A modern city with superb harbour views. Darwin has a chequered past involving explorers, a railway, droving, mining and defence, and all are reflected in the present city.

Darwin Harbour is twice the size of Sydney Harbour and is home to a wide variety of tropical fish, including the famous barramundi, dolphins, turtles, sea snakes and, of course, crocodiles. Darwin was the target for bombing during WW2 and the East Point Military Museum has excellent commemorative displays of memorabilia and equipment.

You must not miss the range of markets, the best known being the Thursday night Mindil Beach Markets. Close to the city are The Botanic Gardens, including fabulous palms and orchids. At Doctor's Gully you can handfeed fish in the sea. See the fabulous Pearling Exhibition and the fascinating marine ecosystems at Indo Pacific Marine. Other local places of interest extend to crocodile farms, Aviation Heritage Centre, with its B52 bomber, NT Museum and Art Gallery. Picnic and swim safely at the beautiful shaded permanent Berry Springs and Howard Springs Reserves.

Within easy reach of the city are a wide variety of attractions. One of the most outstanding is the multi award winning Territory Wildlife Park. Lake Bennett, The Lakes Resort and Windows on the Wetlands provide further diversity.

It might be the relaxed lifestyle of Darwin, the lure of its unique attractions, the spectacular change of seasons, or just being a part of the tropical scene, but having experienced Darwin, you will never forget it.
