Alice Springs Telegraph Station

History

In the late 1800s the Adelaide to Darwin overland Telegraph line was established to bridge the isolation and communication gap between Australian towns and cities as well as Australia with other countries. The Telegraph Station was the first site of European settlement in Alice Springs where it was in service for 60 years before becoming a school for indigenous children. The telegraph line played a pivotal role in Australias history and with 12 stations along the line, the Alice Springs Station is the most well preserved of them all.

Historical Precinct

The station is now part of a historical precinct which consists of a number of telegraph related buildings, some of which have been restored. They were originally built for the station master, his family, station staff and horses. Upon visiting you will have a map that guides you through the various buildings of the station, pointing out areas and information of interest. The buildings also contain historical furnishings and artifacts on display from this era and the post office which allows you to send a letter with a special post mark.
